Meet our poet: Richard Harries

Richard Harries is a poet, from Withernsea, who has been writing for around seven years about everyday life and his concerns with the world.

We asked Mr Harries to help raise awareness of modern slavery and write a poem for our website. He shared with us how he feels about the issue and his encounters that helped him create the poem:

The poet initially started writing for his grandchildren, around seven years ago, so they would have something to remember him by. A couple of years later he then discovered a spoken word night in Keyingham Folk Club and decided to get involved by reading out his work. Since then, he has travelled across Yorkshire to entertain in more clubs and festivals.

As well as performing live, Richard Harries also shares his poems on YouTube. His videos have had 72,482 views.

This year he is due to perform at Filey Folk Festival (28 April – 1 May), Cottingham Springboard Festival (26 – 28 May) and he regularly entertains people at Bricolage Café in Hull.
